News Roundup – June 16 Soweto Youth Uprising

As we commemorate and prepare for Youth Day tomorrow, we remember the significance of African youth protesting in 1976 against the Bantu Education Department. The aim of the protest was to detest Afrikaans as the basis language of instruction in secondary schools. In 2021, we still have many challenges facing the youth, from high unemployment to the youth legacy.

Merely 11 days ago Zaheer Sarang and Nabeela Khan, a young couple committed to spending their lives together. Shortly after arriving home from their honeymoon, the couple was found dead in Johannesburg. The Daily Maverick reported that the parents found the couple in the shower after suspected electrocution. Residents in the area have reported the electrical and water faults on numerous occasions with no action taken. The City Power has opened an urgent investigation.
