Opinions of the day: A deep concern for the foundations of learning in South Africa

“As much as one may agree or disagree with the notion of decolonised education, it must be accepted that the education that the majority of South Africans get is, to quote Jonathan Jansen, ‘rubbish’. ” writes retired educator Michael Workman for the Daily Maverick. Workman further argues that the curriculum reform initiatives do not work in South Africa, due to politics, the lack of equality, equity and proper implementation structures and the consequences that follow.

Pepe Marais writes in the Mail & Guardian the formula for becoming a great leader. In his opinion piece, Marais states that adults have to adopt the same vision as children, pursue a “passion for fun, and help others”. In his role as the chief creative officer, he puts purpose above profit and as a result, the business has thrived and employees feel valued.

The Firearms Control Amendment Bill sparked a debate amongst many South Africans today questioning the right to own a gun for self-defence. While our Constitution protects our right to live safely, the prevalence of guns directly disassociates with protection. Adèle Kirsten argues that guns are not the solution to building safer communities as their main purpose is to kill, not protect.
