Meeting Miss Soweto 2021 Finalist – Ontshiametse Tlhopane

1. Favourite scary movie?
The only full scary movie I’ve gotten to watch is The Conjuring. I liked it because I found humour in it despite how scary it was.

2. Favourite social media influencer?
Nompumelelo Ledwaba aka mpoomyledwaba or Mrs Mom is my favourite influencer. I admire her wisdom and her work ethic and how she approaches topics on her YouTube channel and podcast. Mpoomy is also a Christian woman like myself but what makes her stand out is how she uses her faith to be positive to people instead of projecting on people who follow her. I also love how she serves as a positive influence and representative.

3. Favourite Marvel or DC villain?
The Sandman is my favourite. He shows that there is a story to everyone and carries depth. The development about him on trauma and his conflict between good and bad resonate with regular good people who turn bad as a result of unresolved problems and previous life events.

4. Introduce yourself.
My name is Ontshiametse Tlhopane, I’m 20 years old and I am a final year student completing my degree in criminology and sociology.

From giving energy that allows people to be comfortable around me to giving empathy, kindness and love in the presence of all that is happening around us; that is what I am about. I’m really friendly and sociable with hints of awkwardness sometimes. That just shows that I’m not perfect. I’m open to making mistakes and learning from them so I am open to correction and growing from it.

5. How do you feel about being selected as a Miss Soweto finalist?
More than anything I am grateful to God for granting me favour to get to this point in the Miss Soweto pageant. Being able to make the best out of this opportunity is a huge privilege that will mould me even more than I ever thought possible. I am excited to see what lies at the end of this journey, especially for my character.

6. What are you passionate about?
I absolutely love conversations that breed space for learning, growth and introspection. I am passionate about education not in the sense of qualifications but in having people learn and unlearn especially about problems within our society.

7. Why do you think you have what it takes to be the next Miss Soweto?
I have the heart for the Miss Soweto title. One of my biggest blessings is my big heart and it allows me to be kind and open to people, not to turn a blind eye to their hurts and wishes. It allows me to exercise empathy and love, which none of us can do without. At the core of who Sowetans are is Ubuntu and I think I am in a position to exercise that with the help of the title of Miss Soweto.
