Top News: Fatal festive season roads and where are all the chips?

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says taxis and trucks contribute the most to fatal accidents on our roads over the festive period. Mbalula was speaking roadside on the Mabopane Highway in Soshanguve where he released the preliminary festive season statistics. Mbalula raised concern over the high number of accidents on SA’s roads, in which as many as five fatalities can come from a single crash. If you’re travelling today and tomorrow to be near friends and family for Christmas, please be careful, buckle up and abide by all the rules of the road.

Where are all the Lays and Simba chips? If the grocery store shelves are looking a little light on chips lately, it’s because there is a potato shortage in SA leaving chip manufacturers with low stock. Icy weather conditions during the winter months affected farmers ability to yield a good amount of potatoes with many spuds having to be destroyed because of damage while some retailers have started to put up signs apologising for the lack of chips in-store.

On the sports front, Kaizer Chiefs has had a rollercoaster 2021, from sacking coach Gavin Hunt, reaching the CAF Champions League final only to lose to Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly 3-0, an outbreak of Covid-19 that ran through the club, and then the PSL denied Chief’s request to postpone matches this month because of the outbreak of coronavirus. But Chief’s did manage to end the year off in style as Khama Billiat and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s goals gave the club all three points against Maritzburg United for a 2-0 victory on Wednesday evening.
