Last night President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Cape Town City Hall. Due to a fire that destroyed the National Assembly last month, this is the first time in history that the SONA was held outside Parliament.
Here are a few highlights that President Ramaphosa mentioned in the SONA:
- Eskom has set up a separate transmission company “to reverse many years of neglected maintenance and underperformance of existing plants”.
- To combat cable theft and vandalism on the freight rail network, Transnet will soon offer its terminals to commercial partners.
- After two years of lockdown, the Covid-19 committee is finalising the plan to end the national state of disaster.
- The R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant has been extended to March 2023.
