The aftermath of the floods continues to be a challenge for the communities around Durban. Many people still lack access to even the most basic services, like clean water.
Residents of Tongaat vented their anger by blocking the roads and participating in a protest over the lack of access to water for more than 50 days.
“Local residents blocked Watson Highway, burning trees and tyres, and demanding immediate action from government officials.”
They are making accusations of inadequate service delivery and neglect against the government.
“The community of largely elderly residents said they received little to no help from authorities even though they are well aware that their taps are dry. The area was hit the hardest by the floods.”
