Japanese court acquits longest-serving death row prisoner

Shizuoka (Japan) (AFP) – The world’s longest-serving death row prisoner has been acquitted, more than half a century after his murder conviction, following a Japanese court ruling that evidence had been fabricated. Ailing health has prevented 88-year-old former boxer Iwao Hakamada from appearing in the court to learn the outcome of the retrial, granted a decade ago after a long campaign by his supporters.
