Top News of the Day: SAPS work with community to maintain peace in Diepsloot | Black Coffee: “The Grammy award is an extremely big deal to me”

In yesterday’s newsletter, we addressed the seven killings that took place in Diepsloot over the weekend. Yesterday Police Minister Bheki Cele assigned a specialist police team to patrol the area and restore order.

Prior to assigning the specialist team, another resident was killed in Diepsloot. “A 43-year-old Zimbabwean, Elvis Nyathi was assaulted and killed by a mob in Diepsloot.” His wife has departed her house for protection.

After the Tactical Response Team and Public Order Policing patrolled the streets, community members confirmed that the specialist police team is helping to restore order. “You must do this every night so we can sleep in peace,” said one community member.

According to News24, residents of Diepsloot said they can again sleep soundly after police patrolled the streets after serial killings and protests on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, in local entertainment news, Grammy winner Black Coffee was the subject of an exclusive interview with the Mail & Guardian on his Grammy achievement.

Nkosinathi Maphumulo aka Black Coffee spoke candidly about his struggle to pursue a career in entertainment and the many challenges he faced from stigma to starting a foundation to help African kids.

“The award isn’t just for me. It’s to show them (African kids) that this isn’t about music alone either. It’s about anything they may want to do.”
