Two girls hacked to death in KwaZulu-Natal, MEC calls the incident ‘totally abhorrent and sickening’ – News24

It’s the start of Women’s Month, but that didn’t stop a man from entering a KZN home and brutally hacking two grade 12 girls to death.

The man is alleged to have entered the rented student accommodation in Ngwangwane village, in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma local municipality in southern KwaZulu-Natal and attacked the two girls with an axe.

One body was found inside the house while the other was found dumped five kilometres away. Police say the man was captured, escaped from custody and then recaptured. Read more here.

In a separate incident, a male student allegedly killed a fellow 23-year-old female student at the Mangosuthu University of Technology at the Ark Royal residence in Durban over the weekend.

MUT spokesperson Bheki Hlophe said it was difficult to communicate after the “heartless and brutal killing of Xolile Mbatha” at the beginning of Women’s Month.

The male student is believed to have fled the scene and is still on the run from the police. Read more here.

Lara van Niekerk leads Tatjana Schoenmaker to gold-silver triumph – Times LIVE

Lara van Niekerk became South Africa’s new swimming sensation after she beat reigning Commonwealth 100m breaststroke champion Tatjana Schoenmaker.

Van Niekerk came home in a personal best time of 1min 05.47sec to claim gold while Schoenmaker clinched a historic gold-silver for team SA with a time of 1:06.68.

Chad le Close missed two opportunities to become the outright most decorated athlete at the Olympic games as he finished fourth in both the mixed 4x100m medley and 100m butterfly. Read more here.
