South Korean Olympic shooter Kim Ye-ji keeps cool over newfound fame


Seoul (AFP) – When Kim Ye-ji first tried shooting at age 12 she could not lift the gun. Now, she is the world’s most internet-famous Olympic shooter. Kim, 32, won silver in the women’s 10m air pistol at this summer’s Paris Olympics. She tells AFP that she fell into her sport by accident.

Putin meets Venezuela’s Maduro at BRICS summit


Kazan (Russia) (AFP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin holds talks with the leader of Moscow-allied Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, at the BRICS summit the Russian city of Kazan. Putin told Maduro, who was in Russia on a first visit since 2019, that Venezuela was a “reliable partner” for Moscow. IMAGES

Bangladesh students decry surge in violence against women


Dhaka (AFP) – Crowds of Bangladeshi female students marched in Dhaka with burning torches, demanding the government stem a reported dramatic surge in violence against women. Some amongst the chanting crowd said that they had hoped that the student-led revolution that toppled autocratic ex-leader Sheikh Hasina in August would help improve the situation for women.

Floods in northeast Senegal after river overflows


Oudourou (AFP) – Locals in Senegal’s northeastern Matam navigate flooded roads on boats and vehicles after heavy rains caused the Senegal River to overflow its banks. Around 55,000 people have been affected by the floods according to figures released by the government last weekend.

Mourners gather at Navalny’s grave ahead of memoir release


Moskau (AFP) – Alexei Navalny is being remembered by neighbours and visitors at his grave ahead of the release of his memoir, ‘Patriot’, which he wrote during the final years of his life. Navalny began working on the book in 2020 after surviving a nerve agent poisoning. The book details Navalny’s youth, political career, marriage, family, assassination attempts, and attacks on his loved ones.

British PM launches this year’s Poppy Appeal campaign


London (AFP) – Ahead of a cabinet meeting in London’s Downing Street, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer launches this year’s Poppy Appeal. The event is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign, held every year in November, with millions of the red flowers sold.
