French town uses camels to help holidaymakers collect rubbish


Frontignan (France) (AFP) – In Frontignan in southern France, under a blazing sun, two dromedary camels roam the beach with a bag on their backs, in search of rubbish to collect from holidaymakers. For beachgoers, it’s an unlikely sight. “It’s surprising but it was for a good cause against pollution,” said Luc.

At least 27 dead a week after landslide in Indonesia


Bone Bolango (Indonesia) (AFP) – As Indonesian rescuers near the end of their search and rescue operation following a landslide on 6 July, more than a dozen people remain missing and at least 27 have died. The landslide hit a remote village in Bone Balango district, on the central island of Sulawesi, following heavy rain.

Romania faces down Louis Vuitton for ‘stealing’ its beloved blouse


Vaideeni (Romania) (AFP) – Locals in the village of Vaideeni, at the foot of Romania’s Carpathian mountains, are angry at French luxury brand Louis Vuitton, who they say have “stolen” the design of their traditional blouse. Maria Gioanca, one of two dozen women who still hand sew the black and white garment in the village, believes the blouse should “stay here in our area”.

In Cuba, a man’s garden turned sanctuary for the world’s smallest bird


Cienega de Zapata (Cuba) (AFP) – The wings of the world’s smallest birds are an almost invisible blur as they whiz around tourists visiting Bernabe Hernandez’s private garden in Cuba, transformed into a haven for a hummingbird found only on the island. The small bird is listed as “near-threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
