Pyongyang (AFP) – North Koreans read news in the Pyongyang Metro as the former propaganda chief Kim Ki Nam, credited with masterminding the personality cult surrounding the ruling Kim dynasty, died, with leader Kim Jong Un photographed bowing at his funeral bier.

Eurovision finalists rehearse on eve of the competition’s climax


Malmö (Sweden) (AFP) – The finalists of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest take to the stage for a dress rehearsal at the Malmo Arena. Among them is Israel’s Eden Golan, who qualified for this weekend’s grand finale, defying thousands of demonstrators marching in host country Sweden over the Gaza war.

Brazilians rescue stranded horse from rooftop in flooded city of Canoas


brazil (Brazil) (AFP) – A stranded horse is rescued from the floods in Canoas city in southern Brazil. The animal was removed from a roof after being sedated, and placed on a boat. Some 400 municipalities have been affected by the worst natural calamity ever to hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with at least 107 people dead and hundreds more injured. A total of 134 people were reported missing and nearly 1.7 million have suffered damage in flooding the government and experts have linked to climate change.

More than 100,000 people have fled Gaza’s Rafah: UN


Geneva (AFP) – More than 100,000 people have fled Rafah in recent days, the United Nations says, with the southern Gaza city under threat of a full-scale Israeli ground invasion. Israel’s military on Monday called for Gazans to leave eastern Rafah, which triggered widespread international alarm.

Peru’s dancing undertakers offering an alternative to solemn funerals


Huacho (Peru) (AFP) – Dancing to the tune of a local band, four pallbearers carry a coffin performing choreographies through the streets of a northern Peruvian village. The so-called “dancers of death” evoking the famous Ghanaian “dancing pallbearers,” has taken root in northern Peru, especially in rural villages, where farewells to the dead are usually more festive than solemn.
