Portugal’s Bobi loses oldest dog title


Leiria (Portugal) (AFP) – Bobi, previously crowned the world’s oldest dog, has been posthumously stripped of his title due to inconclusive evidence of his age, Guinness World Records (GWR) announced Thursday. Guinness relied on microchip data sources from the Portuguese government’s pet database, “SIAC”. When Bobi was chipped in 2002, SIAC “did not require proof of age for dogs born before 2008”, Guinness adjudicator Mark McKinley said in a statement.

Evacuations as firefighters battle Australian blaze


Raglan (Australia) (AFP) – Kangaroos flee a bushfire that forced evacuations of towns in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria. Hot and windy conditions were continuing to drive blazes toward homes near the small town of Raglan, about 150 kilometres (95 miles) northwest of Melbourne, with warnings conditions could worsen throughout the night.

NGO provides food for displaced Palestinians as famine looms in Gaza

Heavy fighting is rocking besieged Gaza as aid agencies warn of looming famine and new talks are held in Cairo towards an Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage release deal.

Cape Town hosts retrospective of iconic South African artist Esther Mahlangu


Cape Town (AFP) – From an old BMW painted in colourful shapes to abstract works and historic photographs, a retrospective of celebrated South African artist Esther Mahlangu opens this week at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, before going on an international tour. The exhibition follows the 88-year-old painter and mural artist’s unusual trajectory from rural South Africa to global acclaim. With no formal art training, Mahlangu earned an international reputation with works referencing her Ndebele heritage using skills passed down for generations. “It’s in my genes to paint Ndebele,” she says.

Congressional support for Taiwan ‘extremely strong’: US lawmaker


Taipei (AFP) – The chairman of the US House of Representatives committee on China said Thursday that support in his country’s legislature for Taiwan was “extremely strong”. “I actually think support for Taiwan in the United States Congress… I see growing and extremely strong support for Taiwan,” said Mike Gallagher, who is heading a five-member delegation on a visit to the self-ruled island.

Palestinian prisoners in Israel radio silent after Hamas attack


Ramallah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Deprived of visiting rights after the October 7 Hamas attack, families of Palestinian detainees in Israel are trying to reach their loved ones by radio as prisons cut off communications during the Israel-Hamas war. The October 7 attack, which sparked the war, resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people in Israel. In Israel’s retaliatory military offensive, at least 29,313 people, mostly women and children, have been killed.

Heavy fighting rocked besieged Gaza on Wednesday as aid agencies warned of looming famine, a day after a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire was blocked by a US veto.
