Critically endangered Javan lorises released in Indonesian jungle


Sukabumi (Indonesia) (AFP) – Seven critically endangered Javan slow lorises were released into the jungles of Indonesia’s Gunung Halimun Salak National Park on Java island on Friday. A dedicated rescue team traversed wet, muddy terrains within the conservation area to release the lorises into their natural habitat.

Rare all-white penguin spotted in Antarctica


Paradise Bay (Antarctica) (AFP) – A rare, all-white Gentoo penguin was spotted by a member of the Chilean Navy in Antarctica. The penguin’s unique discolouration is due to leucism, leaving it the odd one out among the black and white plumage of its species.

Elon Musk visits Auschwitz, defends record on anti-Semitism


Oswiecim (Poland) (AFP) – Elon Musk, owner of X and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, visited the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on January 22, taking part in a memorial service and discussion panel alongside US right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro. Musk’s tour of the camp comes just weeks after he sparked outrage by endorsing an anti-Jewish conspiracy theory on X, for which he has since apologised. He has defended the platform against accusations of anti-Semitism. “I…post a lot on the X platform, you know, sometimes a hundred times a day” he says, “one in a while I’ll do something dumb.”

UK PM Sunak says Yemen strikes aim to ‘degrade’ Huthis’ ability to attack Red Sea shipping


London (AFP) – UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says it is “not sustainable” to attempt to counter Huthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea after they have been launched. Speaking in parliament after a second round of joint US-UK strikes on Huthi targets in Yemen, Sunak says the strikes are aiming to “degrade” the Huthis’ capacity to launch such attacks.

‘War has a heavy price’: Israeli army suffers biggest one-day loss in Gaza


Tel Aviv (AFP) – “War has a very painful and heavy price”, says Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari after 21 soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip, the biggest daily death toll for the military since the start of its ground operation on October 27 following the unprecedented attacks by Hamas on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of about 1,140 people in Israel. Most of the victims were civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Israel has since vowed to destroy Hamas in response.
