Loikaw (Myanmar) (AFP) – The UN is warning that as many as 630,000 people could be in need of assistance in Myanmar in the wake of Typhoon Yagi. The storm swept across northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar more than a week ago with powerful winds and an enormous amount of rain, triggering floods and landslides.
Shanghai (AFP) – Transport was disrupted and tens of thousands of people were left without power after Typhoon Bebinca hit Shanghai’s eastern coastal area. It was the strongest storm to hit the Chinese megacity since 1949.

Kehl (AFP) – Germany expands border controls to the frontiers with all nine of its neighbours to stop irregular migrants in a move that has sparked protests from other EU members. Border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland were already in place before the crackdown was announced. These will now be expanded to Germany’s borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.
