Myanmar floods: Death toll rises, with hundreds of thousands in need


Loikaw (Myanmar) (AFP) – The UN is warning that as many as 630,000 people could be in need of assistance in Myanmar in the wake of Typhoon Yagi. The storm swept across northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar more than a week ago with powerful winds and an enormous amount of rain, triggering floods and landslides.

Czech town reels from record floods


Krnov (AFP) – The northeastern Czech town of Krnov is reeling from a record flood that swept by as the Opava and Opavice rivers rose to record levels on September 15. Flooding sparked by Storm Boris has burst dams, knocked out power and killed several people across central Europe.

Nightlife now rules in Iraq’s former Islamic State group bastion


Mosul (AFP) – Iraqi families can be seen enjoying themselves at restaurants, cafes, and amusement parks in the northern city of Mosul seven years after the Islamic State group was defeated. The city’s streets now come alive at nightfall as residents rediscover the forgotten art of having a good time after being under the harsh rule of the extremist group until it was ousted from its last major Iraqi bastion in 2017.

Endangered pygmy hippo at Thai zoo goes viral


Chonburi (AFP) – The tiny hippo plops to the ground, seemingly unfazed by her rapid rise to TikTok stardom. Moo Deng — whose name in Thai means “bouncy pork”, a popular snack — is now an unwitting poster child for the endangered pygmy hippo.

Germany expands border controls to curb migrant arrivals


Kehl (AFP) – Germany expands border controls to the frontiers with all nine of its neighbours to stop irregular migrants in a move that has sparked protests from other EU members. Border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland were already in place before the crackdown was announced. These will now be expanded to Germany’s borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.

Emmy Awards nominees walk red carpet in Los Angeles


Los Angeles (AFP) – Hollywood celebrities and actors nominated for television’s Emmy Awards walk on the red carpet in Los Angeles ahead of the ceremony. The Japan-set historical epic “Shogun” smashed all-time records and was named best drama, as “Hacks” and “Baby Reindeer” also racked up big wins at the glitzy gala.

Typhoon Bebinca makes landfall in Shanghai


Shanghai (AFP) – Typhoon Bebinca lashes Shanghai with strong winds and torrential rains, forcing flights to be cancelled and highways to close. It is the strongest storm to hit the Chinese city in over 70 years.
