Shika (Japan) (AFP) – People queue outside a relief centre in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture following Monday’s powerful earthquake. The 7.5-magnitude quake triggered tsunami waves over a metre high, toppled buildings, caused a major port fire and tore apart roads.

Powerful earthquake hits central Japan


Niigata (Japan) (AFP) – A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake hits central Japan, damaging homes, setting off a major fire, closing highways and causing tsunami waves more than a metre high. The Japanese government said it was still assessing the extent of damage caused and whether there had been any casualties from the quake, which was felt in the capital Tokyo 300 kilometres (190 miles) away.

Gazans hope 2024 will bring peace in Israel-Hamas war


Jabalia (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – As the world rings in 2024, Gazans hope the New Year will bring peace and an end to the ongoing war in the Palestinian territory. “We at the Jabalia refugee camp also want to celebrate it just like everyone else. How come the world is celebrating while we are being bombarded and massacred here everyday?” a displaced Palestinian asks.

Palestinians hold New Year’s Eve rally for Gaza in West Bank


Ramallah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Palestinians rally in Ramallah on New Year’s Eve in solidarity with Gaza, as Israeli strikes pound the besieged strip with no end in sight to the bloodiest ever Gaza war sparked by Hamas on 7 October. The Palestinian militant group’s unprecedented attack killed about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 21,800 people, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Coffee prices soar amid high demand in war-torn Gaza


Rafah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – In the war-torn Gaza Strip, the price of coffee has soared, amid a humanitarian crisis and lack of basic necessities caused by the Israel-Hamas conflict. “Even if it is expensive, people are used to drinking it every morning with a cigarette,” a coffee seller in Rafah says. The war began after Hamas’s 7 October attacks on Israel which left around 1,140 people dead, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. In response, Israel launched a massive military offensive against the Palestinian Islamist movement which has killed at least 21,900 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the strip’s Hamas-run health ministry.
