Northern French village of Montcavrel submerged in water following storm


Montcavrel (France) (AFP) – The northern French village of Montcavrel in the Pas-de-Calais region has been flooded after a night of torrential rain. The flooding follows an already destructive rise in water levels on 7 November. ‘I miss my family’: Gaza workers stuck in West Bank desperate to return despite war


Ramallah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Many Gazan workers stranded in the city of Ramallah in the West Bank and forced to sleep outside on mattresses in the courtyard of the local community centre, want to return home, despite the war. “I miss my family, my daughters, my mother and father,” says Ahmed Misbah Saqr, a worker from Khan Yunis in Gaza. Not long after Hamas launched its surprise attack on 7 October, Israel annulled the 18,500 work permits given to Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, where unemployment sits at 50 percent. Some workers have already been returned to the Gaza Strip. In early November, Israel sent thousands of Palestinian workers back to the territory, several of whom told AFP they had been imprisoned after their work permits were cancelled.

‘Greed’ in the way of climate action says US climate envoy John Kirby


Singapore (AFP) – US climate envoy John Kerry says greed is the biggest impediment to climate action. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, he also called the building and funding of coal power plants “irresponsible.” Kerry is visiting the city-state from November 10 to 12 to advance US objectives on climate and clean energy and speak at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, the State Department said.

Bangladesh police clash with protesting garment workers


Gazipur (Bangladesh) (AFP) – Violence breaks out in the industrial town of Gazipur outside the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, after more than 10,000 workers staged protests in factories and along highways to reject a government offer of a pay rise. A government-appointed panel raised wages earlier this week by more than 50 percent for the country’s four million garment factory workers, who are seeking a near-tripling of their monthly wage.

Number of Afghans returning from Iran spikes amidst Pakistan exodus


Islam Qala (Afghanistan) (AFP) – The number of Afghans coming home from Iran has doubled in the past month, according to a top border official at the Islam Qala crossing near the western Afghan city of Herat, with returnees telling AFP that Iran’s security forces have increased pressure on them to leave. The rise comes as Afghanistan’s eastern border crossings with Pakistan are being inundated with returnees after Islamabad ordered 1.7 million undocumented Afghans to leave voluntarily or face deportation.
