Displaced Gazans camp outside Khan Yunis hospital in the south


Khan Yunis (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Displaced Palestinians camp on the grounds of the al-Nasser hospital in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, amid ongoing battles between Israel and Hamas. “No water, toilets are closed, there are no bakeries. We manage to get a loaf of bread every three or four days,” says Umm Alaa al-Hajin who was displaced from a village in northern Gaza. The Israeli army says that on 8 November, 50,000 people fled their homes in the north, which has become the main battle ground between Hamas and Israeli forces. More than 1.5 million people have already been displaced, seeking refuge in the south of the besieged strip.

Ukrainian truckers stuck as Polish transport companies block border crossings


Lviv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukrainian lorry drivers are stuck in a queue at the Rava-Ruska border crossing on their side of the border, as Polish hauliers continue to block several crossing points. “Poland is a transit country, we are going to Estonia. Why should we wait for the Poles to reach an agreement with someone else?” says Ukrainian trucker Dmytro.

Macron says Palestinian Authority has "a responsibility" to work against terrorism


Paris (AFP) – French President Emmanuel Macron says the Palestinian Authority has an “eminent responsibility” to work alongside the international community “to find a solution on the clear fight against terrorism”. He is hosting a conference in Paris on humanitarian aid for Gaza as the war between Israel and Hamas enters its second month. During the conference, from which Israel is absent, Macron has also stressed the need to ” work towards a ceasefire”.

Palestinians flee fighting between Hamas and Israel, head to southern Gaza


Bureij (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Palestinians flee to the southern part of the Gaza Strip as fighting and bombardment continues in the north which has become the main battle zone between Hamas fighters and the Israeli army. The warring parties were locked in heavy, close-quarter fighting in Gaza City on 9 November, including a 10-hour battle that Israel said toppled one of the group’s strongholds. The Israeli army says 50,000 people fled northern Gaza on 8 November, adding to the 1.5 million who have already sought safety in the south.

Indonesia inaugurates Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar farm


Purwakarta (Indonesia) (AFP) – Indonesia inaugurates a $100 million floating solar farm as it seeks more opportunities to transition to green, renewable energy. The Cirata floating solar farm is built on a 200-hectare (500-acre) reservoir in West Java, about 130 kilometres (80 miles) from the capital, Jakarta.

Gaza doctors battle power outages with head lamps and car batteries


Jabalia (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Doctors in the Gaza Strip are using head lamps to perform surgery due to power outages, says Ahmad Mhanna, a doctor at the Al Awda hospital in the north of the territory. Health facilities in the besieged strip are overwhelmed and medical stocks in short supply as they are increasingly targeted by attacks, according to a report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Kazakh President welcomes Russian President Vladimir Putin in Astana


Astana (Kazakhstan) (AFP) – Kazakh president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev welcomes Russian president Vladimir Putin to Kazakhstan with an official ceremony. The Russian leader’s visit to Astana comes while Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi are in Uzbekistan, amid renewed diplomatic interest in the region. Central Asia’s former Soviet republics have sought to diversify their partnerships as Moscow’s sway over the region, which it considers as being under its sphere of influence, has waned since Russia began its assault in Ukraine.

French President Macron calls for ‘ceasefire’ at Gaza aid conference in Paris


Paris (AFP) – French President Emmanuel Macron calls for a “ceasefire” in Gaza as he opens a conference in Paris on aid for the Palestinian territory. The besieged strip has been under bombardment by Israel since the 7 October attacks by Hamas which killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials. “Civilians must be protected, and this is absolutely essential and non-negotiable,” says President Macron as the war between Israel and Hamas enters its second month. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, Israeli strikes on Gaza have killed more than 10,500 people, mostly women and civilians.
