Foreign passport holders wait at Rafah border for evacuation to Egypt


Rafah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Palestinian dual nationals and foreigners wait to pass through the Rafah border crossing from the southern Gaza Strip to Egypt. “We’ve been waiting for a while for our names to be added to the list,” says Mazen Danaf, a German passport holder. The Rafah crossing was opened on 1 November for three days before it closed again amid a dispute over the passage of ambulances. Departures resumed on 6 November.

Residents lament ‘a lot of damage’ in flood-hit northern France


‘There’s not much we can do,’ says Mathieu Barras, who owns a plot of land in northern France, where heavy flooding forced dozens of schools to close and rendered some roads only accessible by boat. The flooding came as heavy rainfall caused the nearby Slack river to overflow, submerging dozens of towns in the northern Pas-de-Calais region. A week earlier, more than a dozen people died across western Europe after Storm Ciaran brought heavy downpours and record winds.
