G7 backs ‘humanitarian pauses’ in Gaza


Tokyo (AFP) – Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa lists G7 members’ points of agreement on the Israel-Hamas war, saying they support “humanitarian pauses and corridors”. They stop short of calling for a ceasefire.

Candlelit vigil in Tel Aviv to mark one month since Hamas attacks


Tel Aviv (AFP) – People light candles at a memorial set up around a fountain in Israel’s Tel Aviv to remember those killed and taken hostage by Hamas a month ago. “We’re lighting candles … and we are keeping the memory alive to never forget and keep that light alive,” says Shimi Rozen. The 7 October attacks by Hamas left more than 1,400 people dead in Israel, mostly civilians, and over 240 people were taken hostage, according to Israeli officials. Israel has since launched a military campaign to destroy Hamas in Gaza, killing more than 10,500 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

‘Daesh broke us’: displaced Malians find refuge in Kidal after fleeing jihadist attacks


Kidal (Mali) (AFP) – A few basic tents and just enough possessions to survive is all that remains for the displaced people who fled the jihadist violence in the Talataye region of northeastern Mali: “Daesh broke us. They didn’t leave us any livestock or household goods, they even took our blankets” says Mahamad Almghtar Ag Lahsan. In this camp adjacent to the town of Kidal, some displaced people have found refuge after a journey of several days on foot through the desert.

A Napoleon I bicorne hat up for auction in Paris


Paris (AFP) – A Napoleon I bicorne hat and some twenty other objects from the same collection are being exhibited in Paris ahead of their sale by the Osenat auction house on 19 November. “The hat alone represents Napoleon’s image throughout the world,” says auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat. Valued at between 600,000 and 800,000 euros, it will have a starting price of 500,000 euros, according to the president of Osenat Auctions.

Bangladesh garment workers reject pay rise


Dhaka (AFP) – Bangladesh raised the minimum monthly pay for the country’s four million garment workers by 56.25 percent on Tuesday, but the decision was immediately rejected by unions seeking a near-tripling of the figure.
