‘The city looks dead’: residents on flood-wreaked Derna


Derna (Libya) (AFP) – A week after a tsunami-sized flash flood devastated the Libyan coastal city of Derna, search and rescue for bodies and any survivors continue. The massive flood burst two upstream river dams in Derna. Questions are being asked about whether the disaster could not have been prevented, as cracks in the dams have been reported since 1998.

Ukraine says its forces take control of Klishchiivka near Bakhmut


Klyshchiivka (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukrainian authorities on Sunday announce that Kyiv’s forces have retaken Klishchiivka, a tactically important town south of Bakhmut. Kyiv began pushing back against Moscow’s forces in the south and east of the country in June after building up Western weapons and recruiting assault battalions.

Franco-era torture victim hopes to break Spain’s ‘wall of impunity’


Madrid (AFP) – Julio Pacheco Yepes will be the first victim of torture under the Franco regime to testify before a Spanish judge investigating allegations of torture, at a hearing that opens on Friday. In 1975, during the last years of the Spanish dictatorship, the 19-year-old student was arrested, imprisoned and tortured for several months. Together with his wife, who was also tortured, they hope their action will break down the “wall of impunity” that surrounds the abuses of the Franco regime.

Portuguese fight to preserve bullfighting exception in Barrancos


Barrancos (Portugal) (AFP) – The village of Barrancos upholds local tradition despite Portugal’s 1928 ban on killing bulls at “corridas”, or bullfighting ceremonies. Although parliament granted a special exception to Barrancos, allowing it to continue with the killings, animal rights activists say it’s a cruel and outdated custom.

Zelensky urges neighbouring countries to lift embargo on Ukraine grain imports


Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Following the EU’s decision to lift its ban on Ukrainian grain imports, President Volodymyr Zelensky urges neighbouring countries to do the same and support the nation at war. “It is important that European unity works bilaterally,” Zelensky says, “Europe always wins when agreements work and promises are kept.”

Syrians in Idlib pray for victims of deadly Morocco quake, Libya floods


Idlib (Syria) (AFP) – Syrians in rebel-held Idlib, in northwestern Syria, pray for victims of the devastating earthquake that has killed thousands and destroyed tens of thousands of homes in Morocco and victims of the tsunami-sized flash flood that swept the Libyan port city of Derna, killing more than 3,000. Syria was also hit by a devastating earthquake on February 6th that killed over 5,000 people.
