Havana (AFP) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrives in Havana for a the G77 plus China summit, a group made up of some 100 countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America, promoting a less “unfair” international order. Over thirty heads of state and government are expected to attend, including the presidents of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Colombia Gustavo Petro, Argentina Alberto Fernandez and South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa. “Buffalo Soldiers”: revered Asian buffalo claims its place on Brazilian island


Soure (Brazil) (AFP) – An incongruous sight meets visitors of the northern Brazilian island of Marajo: thousands and thousands of water buffalo, animals endemic to India and Southeast Asia that have found a new home in South America. The buffalo are employed as patrol animals by the military police in Soure, where heavily-armed officers ride on their backs in specially-adapted seats. There are currently around half-a-million water buffalos on Marajo today, more than then island’s human population of 440,000.

Meghan and Harry join basketball crowd at Invictus Games in Germany


Düsseldorf (Germany) (AFP) – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wave and laugh in the crowd at a wheelchair basketball match between Ukraine and Australia at the Invictus Games in the German city of Dusseldorf . The royal couple presented the gold medals to the US team, winners of the competition. Prince Harry, who served in the military in Afghanistan, founded the Invictus Games in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick service members.

Romanian army builds air-raid shelters after drone fragments found near Ukraine border


Plauru (Romania) (AFP) – Romanian soldiers build air-raid shelters to protect residents in the eastern Romanian village of Plauru, after drone fragments were found in the area across the border from Ukraine. The NATO member said fragments of a drone “similar to those used by the Russian army” were found by soldiers in the area in early September. Villagers say they have got used to the sound of war and fear drones encroaching: “We think about them crashing on a home,” says local mayor Tudor Cernega.

Italian island struggles to tackle migrant surge, doubling population


Lampedusa (Italy) (AFP) – The Italian island of Lampedusa is struggling to cope with a surge in migrant boats from North Africa. The tiny island is hosting more than 7,000 people, which is equivalent to the entire local population. Men, women and children were forced to sleep on makeshift camping stretchers as the local migrant reception centre was overwhelmed, built to house fewer than 400 people. Almost 124,000 migrants have arrived on Italy’s shores so far this year, up from 65,500 in the same period last year.
