Fans "impressed" by Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slam titles


New York (AFP) – At the age of 36, Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Sunday to win his fourth US Open and a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title. The record was set by Australian player Margaret Court in 1973. “He’s such an amazing and talented player,” says Alex Arredondo, a fan from Mexico city, “it’s an honor to be here”.

Afghan sisters take battle against Taliban to Cologne, Germany


Cologne (Germany) (AFP) – Afghan sisters Tamana and Zarmina Paryani are on a 12-day-long hunger strike in Cologne, western Germany to protest against what they call the “gender apartheid” in Afghanistan. Despite being imprisoned in Afghanistan before fleeing to Germany, the sisters are determined to keep raising their voices against the Taliban. “Afghan women are deprived of their basic human rights, because they are women,” says Tamana Paryani, “We want the German government and the UN to recognise the gender apartheid, stand against it, and stop supporting the Taliban.”

US President Biden in Hanoi says he does not want to "contain" China


Hanoi (AFP) – US President Joe Biden says that he does not want to “contain” China at a press conference in Hanoi during a visit to Vietnam. Washington and Beijing have been facing deepening divisions on a range of global issues including trade, security and rights. Biden met Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the G20 summit in New Delhi, a meeting the White House had not announced, and during which the two leaders discussed stability.

France’s Macron meets with Bangladesh PM Hasina


Dhaka (AFP) – French President Emmanuel Macron meets with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the prime minister’s office. The United States and China are competing for influence in the wider Indo-Pacific region, and Macron has pushed France as offering an alternative.

German circus replaces live animals with holograms


Lübeck (Germany) (AFP) – The smell of sawdust and popcorn fills the air, and the clowns, acrobats and magicians are all in place. As the audience members at Circus Roncalli are guided to their seats inside the big top, all of the classic elements of the circus are there — except one: the live animals, that have been replaced by holograms.
