Israeli forces kill one Palestinian in the West Bank during raid


Al Aqaba (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Israeli forces have carried out a raid in the northern West Bank village of Al-Aqaba killing one Palestinian. Abdul Rahim Fayez Ghannam was shot in the head, according to the Palestinian health ministry. This year has been deadliest since 2005 for Palestinians in the West Bank and Israel, according to OCHA, the United Nations’ humanitarian agency. So far this year, at least 225 Palestinians and 32 Israelis have been killed in violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

South Africa’s Ramaphosa visits site of fire that killed more than 70


Johannesburg (AFP) – South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa visits the site of a deadly apartment block fire in which at least 74 people, including 12 children, were killed on the night of 30 August. City authorities said the five-storey block in Johannesburg had been turned into illegal housing after being abandoned. “This is tragic,” Ramaphosa says, describing the incident as “a wake up call for us to begin to address the situation of housing in the inner city.”

EU’s Borrell says Gabon coup followed flawed election


Toledo (Spain) (AFP) – EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell insists the military coup in Gabon could not be compared to the crisis in Niger, arguing officers intervened after ousted president Ali Bongo won an unfair election. “Naturally, military coups are not the solution, but we must not forget that in Gabon there had been elections full of irregularities,” he says, arguing a rigged vote could amount to a civilian “institutional coup”.

In Florida, residents grapple with Hurricane Idalia’s toll


Perry (United States) (AFP) – Florida residents assess the damage from Category 3 Hurricane Idalia’s flooding after the storm inundated coastal communities and knocked out power to thousands. Though Idalia weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and eventually a tropical storm with winds of 60 miles per hour, it remained dangerous as it raked over Georgia and into South Carolina.

Belarus leader slams ‘stupid’ Polish, Baltic calls for Wagner withdrawal


Minsk (AFP) – Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko criticises Poland and the Baltic states for requesting that the Wagner fighters who moved to Belarus after a short-lived rebellion this summer leave the country. “They are whipping up hysteria about the presence of Wagner private military employees on our territory. They have reached the point where they are already demanding their immediate withdrawal from Belarus,” Lukashenko tells members of his Security Council, adding these calls were “unreasonable and stupid demands.”

More than 70 dead after fire engulfs building in South Africa


Johannesburg (AFP) – The death toll from a blaze that started overnight in a central Johannesburg building has climbed to more than 70, including children. It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze. House fires are fairly common in the country, plagued by chronic power outages, where many live in poverty.

Los Angeles (AFP) – In a Los Angeles apparel store, Donald Trump’s historic mug shot is everywhere: on T-shirts, caps, and mugs. Store owner Bill Wyatt says “our crowd is mostly liberal and left-wing, or a little more anti-Trump, they don’t even want to touch anything with his picture on it.”

Giant Buddha statue in Brazil wows visitors


Ibiraçu (Brazil) (AFP) – Tourists visit a giant Buddha statue at the Morro da Vargem Zen Monastery in Ibiracu, in Brazil’s Espirito Santo state. Unveiled in 2021, the statue is more than 30 metres high.

Delhi deploys cutout monkeys to protect G20 summit


New Delhi (AFP) – Delhi authorities have erected life-size cut-outs of langur monkeys to scare away smaller but aggressive macaques from transit routes and meeting venues ahead of the G20 summit next week.
