Rare corpse flower bloom brings Californians for a quick sniff of ‘rotting flesh’


San Marino (United States) (AFP) – Visitors flock to the Huntington Botanical Garden in California to watch and smell the ephemeral blooming of a corpse flower, which smells of “rotting flesh” according to gardener Bryce Dunn. “It’s more like a dumpster in a big city where you walk by and smell the garbage. It’s good… if you like it,” says a visitor.

Protest at expansion of London’s clean air zone


London (AFP) – Protesters against the expansion of London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone gather outside Downing Street to oppose the move, with many saying they couldn’t afford to replace non-compliant cars and vans that they use on a daily basis during a cost-of-living crisis. The city’s mayor Sadiq Khan is pressing ahead with the politically charged extension of the toll across Greater London, arguing it will help clean up the British capital’s air. Earlier this month he increased financial support for vehicle owners, making available to every Londoner various grants worth thousands of pounds to scrap non-compliant cars and trucks.

‘I needed to coach’: new France U-21s coach Thierry Henry


Paris (AFP) – Former French international footballer Thierry Henry holds his first press conference as coach of the Under-21s side, saying that he was not fulfilled in his TV punditry roles and that he “needed to coach”. The 46-year-old former Arsenal striker replaces Sylvain Ripoll and returns to management after leaving his role as Belgium assistant following last year’s World Cup. He will be in charge of the team competing at next year’s Olympics in Paris.

Japan foreign minister reacts to China harassment in Fukushima spat


Tokyo (AFP) – Japan said Tuesday that harassment being faced by Japanese in China after the release of water from the Fukushima nuclear plant was “extremely regrettable”, confirming that a brick was thrown at his country’s embassy in Beijing. Last week, China banned all seafood imports from its neighbour as Japan began releasing treated wastewater from the crippled plant in an operation Tokyo and the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog have said is safe.

Migrants’ perilous trip past buoys, razor wire to reach Texas


Eagle Pass (United States) (AFP) – Migrants wade into the Rio Grande from the Mexican shore to avoid the string of large orange buoys placed by Texas to block their passage, before crossing to Eagle Pass in south Texas, where that state’s governor, Greg Abbott, has deployed the military in an effort to contain the influx of migrants.
