Madrid (AFP) – Spanish people react to the latest news on suspended Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales. Rubiales could face further domestic sanctions as prosecutors at the country’s top criminal court said on August 28 they had opened a preliminary investigation on the grounds his actions could constitute a crime of “sexual assault”. After Spain won the Women’s World Cup in Sydney on August 20, Rubiales sparked a massive backlash after forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony.

Enthusiasts gather in Loch Ness for the biggest Nessie search in 50 years


Drumnadrochit (United Kingdom) (AFP) – The biggest search for the Loch Ness Monster in five decades took place over the weekend in the Scottish Highlands as researchers and monster hunters from across the globe met to track down the elusive Nessie. The search did not yield any sign of the legendary monster but Alan McKenna, a member of the search team, said the search parties had returned to an area where they heard some “fantastic, bizarre sounds”. Christie McLeod travelled all the way from Canada to participate in the hunt for the beast that has captivated people’s imaginations for decades: “I have been hunting Nessie for nine years. This will be my seventh tour on the Loch. My first official hunt.”

NASA and SpaceX Dragon crew docks at the International Space Station


Kennedy Space Center (United States) (AFP) – NASA and SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft docked at the International Space Station on August 27, carrying four astronauts. The crew will spend six months aboard the ISS, where they will carry out multiple science experiments, such as understanding if microorganisms can survive and reproduce in space.

Strong storm and torrential rain lash Spanish island of Mallorca


Consell (Spain) (AFP) – A thunderstorm swept through the Spanish island of Mallorca, bringing torrential rain and flash flooding to several areas on August 27. According to the Spanish Meteorology Agency (AEMET), winds reached 120 km/h in some areas like Serra d’Alfabia and 108 km/h in La Palma where the moorings of a cruise liner broke, causing it to collide with an oil tanker.

Foxconn billionaire Gou announces Taiwan presidential bid


Taipei (AFP) – Foxconn billionaire founder Terry Gou announces that he will formally enter Taiwan’s presidential race as an independent candidate. Gou has long-running ambitions to become the leader of the self-ruled island, and sought the nomination of the main opposition Kuomintang party this year.
