Indonesian maid’s torture highlights lack of helper protection


Jakarta (AFP) – Beaten, forced to eat animal faeces and chained to a dog cage — the abuse of an Indonesian maid, Siti Khotimah, highlights the government’s failure to protect domestic workers at home even as it moves to help those abroad. “They later chained me, on both my legs, my arms and in the neck. They also used handcuff. My head was smacked to the wall and floor,” said Khotimah.

Hawaii: US military deploys helicopters to assist in wildfires efforts


Maui County (United States) (AFP) – The US military deploys helicopters to help fight the fast-moving wildfires on Hawaii’s Maui Island. Two Hawaii Army National Guard CH47 Chinook performed, within five hours, 58 total aerial water bucket drops – totaling over one hundred thousand gallons – on Maui.

Bangladeshi UN worker meets PM after freed from Al Qaeda in Yemen


Dhaka (AFP) – A Bangladeshi citizen working for the United Nations has been freed after a year and a half abduction by Al-Qaeda in Yemen, the prime minister’s office said. “I never thought I would return home,” Akam Sofyol Anam told reporters in Dhaka, following his return a day earlier, calling the last 18 months “horrifying”. In February 2022, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) kidnapped Anam and four others as they returned to Yemen’s southern port city of Aden after a field mission while working for UN Department of Safety and Security.
