Indonesian capital hit by major pollution spikes


Jakarta (AFP) – “When I get home, my nose is dirty” says Nofrizal, a resident of Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, which has topped global air pollution charts every day this week. According to Swiss air quality monitor, IQAir, Jakarta is the world’s most polluted city, coming above other highly polluted contenders.

Violent protest erupts in Argentina over fatal attack on schoolgirl


Lanus (Argentina) (AFP) – Protests have broken out in Argentina following the murder of an 11-year-old schoolgirl, who was beaten and robbed in Lanus, south of Buenos Aires. The killing outraged protesters, already concerned by poverty and economic instability in the South American country. “I have an 11-year-old daughter” says Nelson Vargas, one of those protesting, “when I found out about this, I felt hopeless”. The murder also led politicians to cancel campaigning ahead of two upcoming votes.

Fire burns at French holiday home, killing 11 people


Wintzenheim (France) (AFP) – A fire rages through a holiday home in eastern France, where 11 people were killed on Wednesday. The property, in Wintzenheim, was hosting a group of adults with learning disabilities and their companions at the peak of French summer holiday season. On Thursday, a prosecutor said property was flouting fire safety rules.

Migrants’ trek to US through Panama jungle ‘won’t stop’, says UN official


Panama City (AFP) – Migration to the United States through the Darien Gap, the hazardous jungle area separating Central and South America, “won’t stop” according to Giuseppe Loprete, the UN official in charge of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Panama. More migrants have crossed the Darien Gap so far this year than in the entirety of 2022.

Alleged Ecuadoran gang claim assassination of presidential candidate


Unknown (AFP) – In a video distributed by a group claiming to be Ecuadoran drug trafficking gang ‘Los Lobos’ — meaning ‘The Wolves’ in Spanish — gang members claim responsibility for the assassination of popular presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who was killed while leaving a rally in the nation’s capital on Wednesday.
