South America leaders pose for photo on second day of Amazon summit

UAE’s COP28 President arrives at Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization summit


Belém (Brazil) (AFP) – The UAE’s COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber arrives at the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) summit in Belem, followed by Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gustavo Manrique. The closely watched summit adopted what host country Brazil called a “new and ambitious shared agenda” to save the rainforest, a crucial buffer against climate change that experts warn is being pushed to the brink of collapse. Colombians react after drug lord ‘Otoniel’ is sentenced to 45 years


New York (AFP) – Dairo Antonio Usuga, one of Colombia’s most notorious drug lords, was sentenced to 45 years in prison by a US federal judge. Usuga, known as ‘Otoniel’, was extradited to the US last year, and pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking charges earlier this year. He was the leader of Colombia’s most powerful gang, the Clan del Golfo, or Gulf Clan.

World must ‘wake up’ to Taiwan security threats: Japan ex-PM


Taipei (AFP) – Former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso warns a Taipei security forum Tuesday that the international community must “wake up” to the worsening situation surrounding the Taiwan Strait, a hotspot waterway separating the democratic island from China.
