Protesters call for Bank of England to rethink interest rate hike


London (AFP) – A small group of protesters demonstrate outside the Bank of England ahead of its decision to raise its key interest rate for the 14th time in a row by a quarter-point. Inflation remains stubbornly high in the United Kingdom amid a cost-of-living crisis, a problem protesters believe cannot be solved by raising rates.

Target of major Bolivia manhunt sends video thanking police for ‘tip-off’


Unknown (AFP) – Alleged drug trafficker Sebastian Marset Cabrera claims in a video sent to local TV channel Unitel that a Bolivian anti-drug police chief allegedly gave him prior warning of an attempt to arrest him. Bolivian police have denied tipping him off and continue to search for him. Marset Cabrera is wanted on drug charges in Uruguay, his native country, as well as Paraguay, Brazil and the United States. Brazil police rescue stowaways on ship from Nigeria


Vitória (Brazil) (AFP) – Images released by Brazil’s federal police show officers on a speedboat approaching a cargo ship as it makes its way towards the port of Vitoria, off the southeastern state of Espirito Santo. Four Nigerian stowaways were rescued by the police after surviving 14 days on the rudder of the cargo ship.

‘Still suffering’: Armenia resort struggles to heal after Azerbaijan attack


Jermuk (Armenia) (AFP) – Jermuk was Armenia’s busiest spa resort before arch foe Azerbaijan attacked nearly a year ago. The mountain spa town dotted with hot springs came under artillery fire in September 2022. While authorities insist Jermuk is ready to host tourists again, locals say the wounds are still raw and the tourism industry has been struggling to recover in the aftermath of the assault. The town is now deserted, with its remaining inhabitants “suffering from psychological trauma,” according to tour guide Vazgen Galstyan.

Niger: Thousands rally in Niamey in support of coup d’état


Niamey (AFP) – Thousands gather in Niger’s capital in support of the coup that toppled the democratically elected government, as Western countries grow increasingly concerned about regional security. In the heart of Niamey, demonstrators, some waving giant Russian flags, chant anti-French slogans at the rally organized to mark the anniversary of the West African country’s independence from France in 1960.
