Turkish woman back weaving rare silk after earthquake


Antakya (Turkey) (AFP) – For years, Emel Duman has produced cruelty-free “silk of peace” in her hometown of Antakya. But after a deadly earthquake struck southeastern Turkey in February 2023, Duman was forced to start her life’s work all over. Now she’s hoping to gain a protected designation of origin for her cloth.

Eastmain (Canada) (AFP) – Aerial shots of the wildfires which are continuing to rage across the forests of Quebec, mostly in the northern part of the territory which is mainly populated by isolated Indigenous communities. The province is experiencing an exceptional fire season, shattering all previous records. Canada, which is warming faster than the rest of the planet because of its geography, has been confronted with extreme weather events whose intensity and frequency have increased due to climate change.

Volunteers give swim lessons to migrants


Canet-en-Roussillon (France) (AFP) – For many migrants who made the perilous journey to Europe by boat, the sea can represent death and despair. A nonprofit in France is trying to help people overcome their fear of the water through swim lessons.
