Syria fishermen despair at water loss, river pollution


Raqa (Syria) (AFP) – Around war-torn Syria’s biggest freshwater reservoir, fishermen say their catch is now a fraction of what it used to be as environmental pressures have decimated aquatic life. Many used to fishing in Lake Aleppo say that declining fish stocks mean that they’re struggling to support their families.

Niamey (AFP) – Nigerien soldiers claim to have overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum’s government, in a statement made on national television. “We, the defence and security forces, have decided to put an end to the regime as you know it,” Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane tells the Sahel nation.

Australian police pull over man allegedly drink-driving a lawnmower


Ingham (Australia) (AFP) – Australian police officers pull over a man allegedly driving a ride-on lawnmower whilst drunk, as seen in their body cam footage. According to police, the man was intercepted by highway patrol around 1 am on Sunday while driving the wrong way down a street in the Queensland town of Ingham under the influence of alcohol.

Putin promises free grain for Africa after exiting Ukraine grain deal


Saint Petersburg (AFP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin offers free grain to six poor African countries at the opening of a summit with leaders from the continent days after withdrawing from the Ukraine grain export deal. Russia last week refused to extend a deal under which Ukrainian grain exports passed through the Black Sea to reach global markets, including Africa, increasing pressure on food prices.

Korean War veterans dream of real peace on divided peninsula
