Wildfire devastation on Greek island of Rhodes seen from above


Rhodes (Greece) (AFP) – Aerial shots show the widespread devastation caused by wildfires near the seaside town of Kiotari on the Greek island of Rhodes, with much of the landscape blackened by the flames. Greece has been sweltering under a lengthy spell of extreme heat, with tens of thousands forced to flee Rhodes in peak tourist season.

Ukraine says retook over 16 sq km from Russia in east, south last week


Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister Ganna Malyar says the country’s forces over the past week have recaptured more than 16 square kilometres (six square miles) from Russian forces in the south and east of the country. Kyiv began its highly anticipated counteroffensive against Russian troops last month after stockpiling Western weapons and building up its offensive forces.

Ukraine’s Zelensky says Russia destroying World Heritage Sites in Odesa


Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky says that Russian strikes on Odesa were destroying the port city’s historic city centre, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. “On this night alone in Odesa, nearly 50 buildings were damaged, 25 of them architectural monuments,” Zelensky says, adding that the altar of the Transfiguration Cathedral had been hit. Moscow denies targeting the cathedral.

Alphorn fest brings sound of music to Swiss mountains


Haute Nendaz (Switzerland) (AFP) – A hundred alphorn players gather high up in the Swiss Alps for the 22nd International Alphorn Festival, with their dulcet tones and harmonies echoing around the mountains. The alphorn is a traditional Swiss instrument which was reputedly used to communicate in the mountains, with its clear sound ringing around the valleys.

Tens of thousands flee as fires ravage Greek island of Rhodes


Rhodes (Greece) (AFP) – Wildfires rage across the Mediterranean island of Rhodes as Greece battles with extreme temperatures and blazes across the country. Tens of thousands of people have already fled the island, with many frightened tourists scrambling to get home on evacuation flights.

Peru police clash with protesters demanding president step down


Lima (AFP) – Protesters and police clashed in Lima on Saturday during renewed demonstrations against Peru’s interim President Dina Boluarte, where demonstrators are demanding she step down and hold elections. Women wearing traditional costumes marched through the streets of downtown Lima, one of them denouncing a “traitorous, genocidal government”.

India abuse video triggers women’s reprisal against accused men


Thoubal (India) (AFP) – When a horrific video of a mob abusing naked women sparked outrage in India, a vigilante gang of furious mothers from the same community as the accused men took action. “We condemn the violence against the women and that is why we want capital punishment. That is why we destroyed his house,” says one vigilante.
