Russia’s largest strike in weeks hits Ukraine’s power grid


Kiev (Ukraine) (AFP) – As air raid sirens echoed through the Ukrainian capital, residents of Kyiv sought refuge in underground passages and subways, bracing for potential Russian attacks. The city, along with 14 other regions, faced a barrage of missile and drone strikes on Monday, the largest assault in weeks. The attacks devastated Ukraine’s power grid, killing at least four people and prompting emergency blackouts across the country.

The Liverpool house used for early Beatles gigs becomes an Airbnb


Liverpool (AFP) – A Liverpool house, whose basement is famous for hosting some of The Beatles’ first gigs and which still features John Lennon’s name scratched into the ceiling and Paul McCartney’s paintwork, has been given a new lease of life, listed on Airbnb.

Australia gives millions of workers ‘right to disconnect’


Sydney (AFP) – Australia gave millions of workers the legal right to “disconnect” on Monday, allowing them to ignore unreasonable out-of-hours calls, emails and texts from their bosses. But the reform got a cool welcome from top industry, the Australian Industry Group, who said the new laws are “deeply confusing”.

Syria’s displaced children cool off in mobile pools


Kfar Naseh (Syria) (AFP) – In a camp in northern Syria, children displaced by the country’s 13-year-old war play and splash in volunteer-run mobile swimming pools that provide much-needed cool relief in the sweltering summer heat. The pools at Kafr Naseh camp, in the Aleppo countryside, have been set up by volunteers from the Smile Younited charity.

India desert school’s unique design offers pupils a respite from heat


Jaisalmer (India) (AFP) – The Rajkumari Ratnavati girls’ school, in India’s sweltering Thar desert, is an oasis of cool thanks to a combination of age-old techniques and modern design. The building was designed by US-based architect Diana Kellogg and built by local artisans.
