Queens of the desert: drag show is oasis of glamour in rural S. Africa


Steytlerville (South Africa) (AFP) – Nestled deep in South Africa’s semi-desert Karoo region, a glittery weekly drag show at a charming old hilltop hotel brings a burst of excitement to the conservative, sleepy town of Steytlerville. Every Saturday night, hotel owners and couple Mark Hinds and Jacques Rabie amaze their guests with a night-long cabaret and drag show. “A female impersonation show happening at this hotel in the middle of the Karoo, in the middle of absolutely nowhere creates curiosity,” says Hinds.

Mourning and tribute in Annecy after knife attack


Annecy (France) (AFP) – An impromptu shrine emerged overnight in Annecy where dozens of residents, with tears in their eyes, laid flowers or came to pay their respects in front of the small memorial set up in the playground where a Syrian refugee stabbed four very young children, two of whom are still in life-threatening condition.

People in Mykolaiv region evacuate after Ukraine dam breach


Mykolaiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Emergency services are still racing to rescue people stranded by the flood-swollen waters of the Dnipro River after the destruction of a major Russian-held dam in Ukraine, which have forced thousands to flee, as seen in images published by the Ukrainian Emergency Services in Mykolaiv region on June 8. Ukraine and Russia have traded blame for the Kakhovka dam being ripped open.

UK’s RAF releases footage said to show Russian aircraft being intercepted


In the air (AFP) – Britain’s Ministry of Defence says Royal Air Force Typhoons have been scrambled twice in 24 hours to intercept multiple Russian aircraft “flying close to NATO and Swedish airspace.” RAF cockpit footage claims to show Russian aircraft including an IL-20 ‘COOT’ A and an Su-27 ‘FLANKER’ B being shadowed by NATO aircraft, with Swedish Air Force Gripens among those scrambled to intercept the Russian planes on the evening of Thursday 8 June 2023 and the morning of Friday 9 June 2023.
