Firefighters in Dnipro tackle blaze after deadly Russian strike


Dnipro (Ukraine) (AFP) – Firefighters in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro work on the site of a clinic left ruined and burning by a Russian strike which local officials say killed at least two and left more than 20 injured, amongst them two children. The head of Dnipropetrovsk’s military administration, Sergiy Lysak, writing on Telegram, reported that the region was “massively attacked” overnight with rockets and drones.

Bolivians protest Catholic Church paedophile priest scandal


Cochabamba (Bolivia) (AFP) – Bolivians in La Paz and Cochabamba take to the streets to demonstrate amid a scandal over alleged abuse of dozens of children, committed by Catholic priests. Bolivia has been shocked by revelations that have emerged since confessions of abuse were found in the personal diary of a Spanish priest who died of cancer in Bolivia in 2009.

Rabat celebrates African heritage with drone show at the Chellah


Rabat (AFP) – Five hundred drones light up the sky in Rabat’s historic Chellah complex during a closing show celebrating the Moroccan capital’s designation as the first African capital of culture. The Chellah is an ancient archaeological site, with a medieval fortified Muslim necropolis later built near its Phoenician and Roman ruins.

UGC: Passenger opens plane door mid-air on Asiana flight


Daegu (South Korea) (AFP) – A passenger opens an emergency exit on an Asiana Airlines flight as it was preparing to land in South Korea, as captured on amateur-filmed footage. The carrier told AFP that the plane landed safely but several people were hospitalised.

‘Not chaotic’: Elon Musk’s mum defends Twitter’s DeSantis launch


Antibes (France) (AFP) – Speaking on the blue carpet of the amfAR AIDS charity fundraising gala, held to coincide with the Cannes Film Festival, Elon Musk’s mother Maye Musk says she enjoyed the campaign launch of US presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis, which was held amidst technical difficulties on her son’s Twitter Spaces platform. She insists that any problems were caused by the launch event’s popularity – “they didn’t expect millions to want to go on.” By Twitter’s own metrics, the audio-only event garnered a high of just a few hundred thousand listeners.

South Africa para surfing teens dream of Olympic glory


Muizenberg (South Africa) (AFP) – Sitting on his wheelchair on a sandy Cape Town beach, Raemondo Lessing, 16, watches on as fellow surfers ride the same waves he learnt his craft on. Having lost both his legs and arms to meningitis when he was only a few months old, the teenager is now one of South Africa’s best para surfers — and hopes he will get the chance to show his skills at the Paralympics next year.

Hong Kong’s bun scramblers return for festival after pandemic hiatus


Hong Kong (AFP) – Hong Kong’s annual Bun Scrambling Competition, held every year on Cheung Chau island, returns after a four-year pandemic hiatus. Five-time women’s champion Angel Wong, is gunning for the trophy again this year, aiming to be awarded the prestigious title of “Bun Queen” once again.
