First passenger plane from Russia lands at Tbilisi airport since 2019


Tbilisi (AFP) – Images show a Russian passenger plane landing in Georgia for the first time since 2019, following a decision last week from Russian President Vladimir Putin to lift a flight ban. The resumption of flights has stirred protests in Georgia, as Moscow fought a brief but bloody war with Georgia and recognised two separatist territories in the north of the country as independent. EU to ‘restrict’ trade in Russian diamonds

London show explores sari’s 21st century reinvention


London (AFP) – Around 60 saris designed in the last decade are on display at London’s Design Museum, highlighting the garment’s modern age fashion revival. “The sari is undergoing a radical revolution”, says curator Priya Khanchandani, from being associated with “your grandmother’s wardrobe” to being worn again by young people and styled in contemporary ways.

Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – From “Ukrainian freedom” vodka and anti-tank chocolate cakes to “Putin is a dickhead” ale, the shelves of Kyiv’s shops have begun to fill with patriotic advertising coloured yellow and blue. In the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion, Ukraine’s brands and businesses looking to tap into the wartime mood have turned to marketing filled with displays of nationalism and support for the country’s armed forces.

Early blood test may unravel secrets of pregnancy loss


Hvidovre (Denmark) (AFP) – A blood test taken after a miscarriage suffered as early as week five can help explain why it occurred and in some cases lead to preventative treatments, a Danish-led study has found. Gynecologist, Henriette Svarre-Nielsen and head of the COPL (Copenhagen Pregnancy Loss) project, of Hvidovre hospital near Copenhagen and her team of researchers recently published a study in British journal The Lancet showing that the tests can determine whether the foetus had a chromosome anomaly or whether they should look for another reason.

Nadal pulls out of French Open, set to end career in 2024


Manacor (Spain) (AFP) – Rafael Nadal says he is withdrawing from the French Open, adding that he expects 2024 to be his final year in professional tennis. The 36-year-old Spanish player has played at the claycourt major every year since 2005 and won it 14 times.
