Peru’s health workers fumigate homes to curb deadly dengue outbreak


Lima (AFP) – Clad in protective suits and armed with fumigators, health personnel go door to door in the Peruvian capital, Lima, to eradicate mosquito larvae and halt an outbreak of deadly dengue fever. “We’ve never seen it so bad” says Erika Toribio, a resident of Lima who explains that the disease is “in every neighborhood… in every street”. The outbreak has killed 79 people already in 2023, with more than 73,000 infected.

Climate activists throw fake blood on Swedish finance ministry


Stockholm (AFP) – Climate activists from the group Scientist Rebellion throw red paint on Sweden’s Ministry of Finance in Stockholm, demanding the government stop funding fossil fuels. “The science is clear, we need to act now” says Susanna Klevebro, a researcher and activist.

Indian ethnic clashes shatter harmony and houses


Churachandpur (India) (AFP) – Around 60 people have been killed and 30,000 displaced across the northeastern Indian state of Manipur in an explosion of inter-ethnic violence. Most victims are thought to be from the mainly Christian Kuki tribal group in the hills of Manipur, but members of the majority Meitei people, who are mostly Hindus, have also been targeted.

Israel’s Iron Dome intercepts more rockets from Gaza


Sderot (Israel) (AFP) – Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system intercepts rockets launched from the Gaza Strip, seen from Sderot. Israel and Gaza militants traded heavy fire Thursday, the third day of the worst escalation of violence in months that has killed at least 29 people in the blockaded Palestinian enclave and one in Israel.

US Republicans push to expand Trump’s border wall


Washington (AFP) – Republican lawmakers pass an immigration package that would restart stalled construction of Donald Trump’s southern border wall as the United States braces for a sudden increase in migrant crossings from Mexico. The Secure the Border Act of 2023, which advanced from the Republican-led House of Representatives on a roughly party-line 219-213 vote, would reintroduce several signature Trump-era measures, from completing the wall to bolstering asylum restrictions.
