Senegal harvests first experimental homegrown wheat


Sangalkam (Senegal) (AFP) – Senegalese agricultural researchers are beginning to harvest an experimental crop of wheat, adapted to the country’s climatic conditions, the latest stage in a project started several years ago to try to reduce dependence on imports.

Penguins waddle into new home in Singapore


Singapore (AFP) – A colony of 32 penguins in Singapore was transported from the old Jurong Bird Park to a new park named Bird Paradise. Wildlife officials say that some of the more curious penguins have been seen diving and exploring the deepest recesses of the tank, a positive indicator that they are adapting to their new home.

US Fed raises interest rates by a quarter-point


Washington (AFP) – Fed Chair Jerome Powell announces a quarter-point raise in the US Federal Reserve’s benchmark lending rate, “in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to two percent over time.”
