Scientists in Costa Rica say sloths may help discover new antibiotics


Cahuita (Costa Rica) (AFP) – Costa Rican sloths have been shown to have antibiotic-producing bacteria in their fur that keep pathogens that can make the animal sick at bay. Scientist Max Chavarria of the University of Costa Rica is researching whether this finding could have an application for humans.

Korean War-era camera documents Ukrainian soldiers at the front


Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Arseniy Gerasymenko never imagined he was destined to cover conflicts. A fan of landscape and fashion photography, he was faced with a fait accompli when Russia invaded his country on 24 February 2022. Now, using a retro camera that he says once captured the Korean War in the 1950s, he documents his country’s servicemen at the front.

Trench-digging Ukrainian troops targeted by Russian strikes


Near Bakhmut (Ukraine) (AFP) – Shovels in hand and helmets on heads, Ukrainian soldiers jump out of a military truck and prepare to dig a trench near Bakhmut, in the conflict-hit east of the country. The soldiers on the first digging duty put their rifles in the grass and line up along the designated stretch of ground. The others stand slightly back. But the trench-diggers don’t even have time to start before the shrill sound of a rocket ripped through the air before falling and exploding less than 50 metres away.

The lake – which straddles the borders of Albania, Greece and North Macedonia – is shrinking rapidly, which is putting the animals and nearby environment that depend on it increasingly at risk.

Santiago Pena wins Paraguay election keeping rightwing party in power


Asuncion (AFP) – Economist and former finance minister Santiago Pena celebrates the general election victory at the rightwing Colorado party’s headquarters in Asuncion, Paraguay. Sixty-year-old challenger Efrain Alegre of the Concertacion center-left coalition garnered nearly 27.5 percent despite having gone into the vote with a narrow lead in opinion polls. The outcome bucked a recent anti-incumbency trend in Latin American elections with voters repeatedly punishing establishment parties, often in favor of leftist rivals.
