UN evacuation convoy of 700 people reaches Port Sudan


Port Sudan (Sudan) (AFP) – A UN evacuation convoy arrives in Port Sudan as foreign nations evacuate their citizens from war-torn Sudan. United Nations head of mission in Sudan, Volker Perthes, says he is “happy and glad” the “not-so-comfortable” convoy made it out of Khartoum.

One of the world’s largest rhinoceros farm goes up for auction in South Africa


North West Province (South Africa) (AFP) – One of the world’s largest rhino conservation farm is going up for auction in South Africa. After a 30-year quest to save the endangered species, owner John Hume has no choice but to throw in the towel. The farm is home to nearly 2,000 southern white rhinoceros, whose horns are highly sought after on black markets.

Anti-migrant operation in Mayotte: police intervene in the jungle


Tsoundzou Deux (Mayotte) (AFP) – A group of CRS and RAID police officers are supporting local police officers who have been attacked by young people in the Mayotte island jungle after an identity check. “We want people to protect us”, said a resident of Tsoundzou, who said she felt “terror” and never imagined that she would experience clashes on such a scale. The attacks came after Mayotte authorities launched Operation Wuambushu (“Take Back”) to remove illegal migrants who have settled in slums on the island.

Peru ex-president extradited from US, taken to prison


Lima (AFP) – Peru’s former president Alejandro Toledo flies in on helicopter to the Barbadillo prison, following extradition from the United States to face charges of money laundering and corruption during his mandate. The 77-year-old, who served as Peru’s president from 2001 to 2006, was flown in the evening by helicopter to the Barbadillo prison, journalists witnessed. Toledo is wanted by Peruvian prosecutors investigating a sprawling scandal involving Brazilian construction conglomerate Odebrecht.

Russia says ‘repelled’ drone attack on Crimea port


Moscow (AFP) – Igor Konashenkov, spokesperson for the Russian Defence Ministry, says Russian forces have “repelled” a drone attack on the port of Sevastopol in Moscow-annexed Crimea, adding that there were “no losses”.

Fighting in Sudan ‘could engulf the whole region’: UN chief


United Nations (United States) (AFP) – Fighting between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) “risks a catastrophic conflagration within Sudan that could engulf the whole region and beyond,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says at a Security Council meeting.
