Houston (AFP) – NASA unveils the crew for its first human mission to the Moon in more than 50 years – including the first woman and Black man to make the voyage. The Artemis II flight is a prelude to returning humans to the Moon for the first time in a half century and an eventual mission to Mars.

The former US President will surrender to criminal charges at a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday, taking the United States into uncharted and potentially volatile territory.

Increased security outside Trump Tower ahead of former president’s New York arraignment


New York (AFP) – New York police increase security measures around Trump Tower ahead of the former president’s arraignment. The 76-year-old, who was indicted last week over hush-money payments made to a porn star during his successful 2016 presidential campaign, is expected to hand himself over to authorities on Tuesday. The NYPD is on high alert over potential protests by the former president’s supporters. “We know that there’s been an illegal indictment against our authentic president” says Candace Rojas, lending her support outside the Trump International Golf Club in Florida.

Scholz pledges German support to Moldova in the face of Russian destabilisation attempts


Bucharest (AFP) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says his country will support Moldova against Russian threats, as Chisinau has repeatedly warned it faces hybrid attacks from the Kremlin. “We read reports of Russian attempts to destabilise Moldova with great concern” says Scholz, speaking at a press conference in Romania alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

Podgorica (Montenegro) (AFP) – Jakov Milatovic pops the champagne to toast his win in Montenegro’s presidential run-off elections, which ended decades of rule by the country’s veteran leader, Milo Djukanovic. “This is the night we have been waiting for for over thirty years” says Milatovic, as his rival concedes defeat in a vote that follows months of political deadlock in the tiny Balkan state.

Sorrow in Japan after the death of Ryuichi Sakamoto


Tokyo (AFP) – Music fans at Tower Records in Tokyo react to the death of Japanese composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away on Sunday following his second cancer diagnosis. Sakamoto rose to prominence with the influential group Yellow Magic Orchestra and helped to lay the foundations of a range of popular modern genres, including hip-hop and house music. “He was magnificent, really” says one fan in the Japanese capital.
