Philippine fishermen struggle as oil spill keeps them ashore


Pola (Philippines) (AFP) – Four weeks after a Philippine tanker loaded with 800,000 litres (210,000 gallons) of thick oil sank off the central island of Mindoro, the vessel is still leaking. Authorities have banned fishing and swimming indefinitely, leaving thousands of fishermen wondering how long they can survive. “If this situation prolongs, I might pull one of my children out of school because we don’t have a source of income,” fisherman Marlon Fabrero said.

Vigil outside Mexican migrant centre where dozens died in fire

Dozens killed in fire at Mexico-US border migrant center


Ciudad Juárez (Mexico) (AFP) – A fire started by migrants protesting against their expected deportation killed at least 39 people at the National Migration Institute (INM) facility in Ciudad Juarez, prompting the mobilization of firefighters and dozens of ambulances.

‘Ruto’s hands are all over this violence’ says Kenyan opposition leader


Nairobi (AFP) – Raila Odinga, who ran against president William Ruto in the Kenyan elections, says that he and his supporters “never envisaged” that the state would respond to protests with a “reign (of) terror on peaceful and innocent Kenyans”. This comes after anti-government protests called by Odinga turned violent, with police firing tear gas and looters going on a rampage. Odinga has called for regular protests every Monday and Thursday, accusing President Ruto of stealing last year’s election and of failing to control the surging cost of living.

London Victorian-era dinosaurs get multi-million pound makeover


London (AFP) – In south London’s Crystal Palace Park, a collection of dinosaur sculptures which date back to 1854 will be among the heritage sites to benefit from new funding announced by the UK’s National Lottery Heritage Fund. The total funding, worth over £24 million, will go towards projects in locations ranging from northern Scotland’s John O’Groats to southwest England’s Penzance.

Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano erupts


Sunda Straits (Indonesia) (AFP) – Images captured by a CCTV camera show Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatoa erupting and spewing hot ash clouds. Mount Anak Krakatoa, which means Child of Krakatoa, erupted four times, officials said, with the biggest followed by another that sent a column of smoke and ash 1,500 metres above its crater.

Mourners pay tribute to victims of Nashville school shooting


Nashville (AFP) – People lay flowers and pray at a makeshift memorial outside a private elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, where a heavily armed former student killed three young children and three staff. “I don’t think it should be as easy to buy flowers as it is a gun,” says a Nashville resident.
