Taiwan tells Honduras ‘not to fall into China’s debt trap’


Taipei (AFP) – Taiwan’s foreign ministry says they will never compete with China for “cash diplomacy” and reminds Honduras not to “drink poison to quench your thirst and fall into China’s debt trap”. Honduras on Tuesday instructed its foreign minister to establish diplomatic ties with China, a move that would sever the Central American country’s long-standing diplomatic relationship with Taiwan.

South Korea, US hold joint military drills as part of Freedom Shield exercises


Paju (South Korea) (AFP) – The South Korea-US combined forces hold joint military drills as part of the ongoing Freedom Shield exercise, which started on Monday and are set to run for 10 days.On Tuesday, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles, having launched two strategic cruise missiles from a submarine Sunday, just hours before the US-South Korea exercises kicked off. North Korea views all such drills as rehearsals for invasion and has repeatedly warned it would take “overwhelming” action in response.

Kobe Bryant’s family unveils his foot and handprints in Hollywood


Hollywood (United States) (AFP) – Kobe Bryant’s widow and daughters unveil late basketball star’s handprints and footprints that will now be on permanent display outside the TCL Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Walk of Fame. The five-time NBA champion became the first athlete to have them imprinted on cement in 2011.

Argentina forests burn amid heat wave and drought


Corrientes Province (Argentina) (AFP) – Firefighters battle a large fire in Argentina’s nothern Corrientes province where blazes have devoured some 6,000 hectares (14,800 acres) of forests in just days. Since the start of the year, with the South American country facing heat wave after heat wave, fires have destroyed more than 100,000 hectares in Corrientes, according to the INTA agricultural technology institute.

Ex-PM Imran Khan accuses Pakistan’s police of trying to kill him


Lahore (Pakistan) (AFP) – Imran Khan accuses the police of attempting to kill him as clashes broke out outside the former Pakistani Prime Minister’s Lahore residence. Police and paramilitary rangers attempting to arrest the country’s onetime cricket captain fought pitched battles with supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party throughout the night.

Pakistan ex-PM Imran Khan says arrest bid a plot to bar him from elections


Lahore (Pakistan) (AFP) – Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan tells AFP the government wants him behind bars in order to stop him taking part in elections due later this year. Riot police halted an attempt to arrest the 70-year-old former leader and onetime star cricketer, ending a siege of his residence after violent clashes with hundreds of his supporters.
