Drought dries reservoir in Uruguay


Canelón Grande (Uruguay) (AFP) – The Canelon Grande reservoir in southern Uruguay is drying up as the country goes through a severe drought. The reservoir’s main purpose is to supply drinking water to the Metropolitan area of Montevideo, while it is also used in irrigation systems in the area.

Nearly 200 people have died in Malawi since the storm pummelled through southern Africa at the weekend for the second time within a few weeks. Relief workers expect the tally to rise.

Libyans celebrate national day of traditional costume


Tripoli (AFP) – Libyan girls and young men, dressed in their country’s traditional clothing, attend celebrations of the national day of the Libyan costume in the capital city of Tripoli. Libya has seen more than a decade of stop-start conflict since the 2011 revolt that toppled strongman Moamer Kadhafi, with a myriad of militias forming opposing alliances backed by foreign powers. It was the first time the national day of the Libyan costume has been celebrated officially since the ceasefire of summer 2020 after Haftar’s attack on Tripoli.

Former Pakistan’s PM Khan supporters clash with police in Lahore


Lahore (Pakistan) (AFP) – Pakistan riot police clash with supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan gathered outside his house to prevent officers from arresting him. Khan was ousted from office by a no confidence vote last year. Officers were met by at least 200 Khan supporters, some wielding sticks and hurling stones, draped in the red and green flags of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. IMAGES
