United Nations (United States) (AFP) – US President Joe Biden says he “supports” expanding “permanent and non permanent” members on the United Nations Security Council. “This includes permanent seats for those nations we have long supported and permanent seats for countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean,” he adds during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

Montjean-sur-Loire (France) (AFP) – Spectacular waterfalls, green forests and fresh air: the water that flows in abundance from Vienna’s taps finds its source in the heart of the Alps, in an unspoiled setting that is the pride of the Austrian capital. While drought is taking its toll across Europe, the city of almost two million inhabitants does not foresee any rationing in the decades to come, thanks to what the city’s climate councillor Juergen Czernohorszky says is a “crisis-proof” water supply from the Alps.

Protesters decry Iranian president’s UNGA attendance in New York


New York (AFP) – Protesters gather near the United Nations headquarters in New York to call out the attendance of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the UN General Assembly. At least eight people have been killed in a crackdown on protests in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini after the young woman was arrested by morality police, according to a combined toll.

Theatre project spotlights Japan’s reclusive ‘hikikomori’


Kyoto (Japan) (AFP) – More than a million people aged 15 to 64 in Japan live highly reclusive lives, retreating from social contact for at least six months, according to a 2020 government estimate. Through an experimental theatre project, two French artists are hoping to offer recovering hikikomori, or “shut-ins”, a chance to express themselves and regain self-confidence.
