Uganda declares the end of deadly Ebola outbreak


Mubende (Uganda) (AFP) – Ugandan health officials and the country’s WHO representative have announced the end of a deadly Ebola outbreak. On September 20, 2022 Uganda declared an outbreak of the Sudan Ebola strain, which killed 55 people and caused the two districts at the centre of it to be locked down for two months. In line with the WHO rules, which say a disease outbreak is over if there are no new cases for 42 days, Ugandan officials report that the last confirmed patient was discharged on November 30.

‘We’re not happy’: UK ambulance workers go on strike for second time


London (AFP) – Ambulance drivers and paramedics in the UK have staged their second walkout in two months as they call for better pay and conditions. Those on the picket lines today in London say they have suffered “real-terms pay cuts” as inflation soars into double-digits. In the midst of widespread industrial action, which has seen NHS nurses, passport officials, postal workers and rail staff walk out in recent months, the UK government has proposed controversial new legislation that would force unions to provide a “minimum service”.

Clean-up begins at Brazil’s ransacked Supreme Court


Brasília (AFP) – The clean-up of Brazil’s Supreme Court building is under way after supporters of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro occupied it for around four hours on Sunday. Police are working in the secured building, surrounded by smashed glass, ransacked offices and vandalised artwork. Gilmar Mendes, a Supreme Court judge, describes the event as a “monstrous brutality”.
