London (AFP) – Scenes outside Buckingham Palace on Friday morning, the day after Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history and an icon instantly recognisable to billions of people around the world, died at her Scottish Highland retreat. She was 96 years old.

Abuja (AFP) – “I remember she gave us our independence on a platter of gold and that am grateful about. And of course, may her soul rest in perfect peace,” says a resident of Abuja. Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, passed away aged 96 at her Scottish Highland retreat. Nigeria was ruled by the British Empire from the mid-nineteenth century until 1960.
