‘I’m starving here’: Displaced people fight hunger and cholera in DR Congo


Goma (DR Congo) (AFP) – Clashes between M23 rebels and the Congolese army have displaced tens of thousands of people in the east of the DRC. Living near the road leading to Goma, the displaced are facing starvation and often have to “fight” for the meagre rations distributed by NGOs and the Congolese government.

Heavy rain triggers floods in Lisbon, leaves one dead


Lisbon (AFP) – Images posted on December 7th show heavy flooding in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, inundating buildings, submerging roads and killing at least one. Lisbon City Hall has issued a red alert warning.

Putin hints that Russia will continue Ukraine energy strikes


Moscow (AFP) – At an award ceremony in Moscow, president Vladimir Putin hints that Russia will continue strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, saying that the “uproar and clamour spreading through the universe” will not “interfere with our combat missions”.

Peruvian President Castillo impeached and arrested, his vice-president invested


Lima (AFP) – Peru’s leftist president Pedro Castillo was ousted by lawmakers and arrested Wednesday in a dizzying series of events in a country long prone to political upheaval. Dina Boluarte, a 60-year-old lawyer who had been vice president, was sworn in as Peru’s first female president just hours after Castillo tried to dissolve Congress in a move criticized as an attempted coup.

Peru’s Castillo is transferred to a police facility


Lima (AFP) – Pedro Castillo is transferred from the Police Headquarters to a police facility in east Lima. Castillo was ousted by lawmakers and arrested after trying to dissolve the South American country’s Congress in a move widely condemned as an attempted coup. The dizzying series of events in a country long prone to political upheaval resulted in even more history, with Vice President Dina Boluarte later becoming Peru’s first woman president. IMAGES
