Hillary Clinton calls for Iran to be removed from UN women’s commission


New York (AFP) – Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calls on the United Nations to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women. “A country that systematically abuses the rights of women and girls has no place participating on a commission whose purpose is to protect those rights,” she says as she takes part in the unveiling of an art installation in New York to shine a light on the repression against women in Iran.

World’s largest volcano erupts in Hawaii


Mauna Loa (United States) (AFP) – Orange glow and ash spew from the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, in Hawaii.Pressure has been building at Mauna Loa for years, according to the United States Geological Survey, which reported the eruption could be seen from 72 kilometers away.

Malala Yousafzai urges Western governments to support Afghan women


London (AFP) – At a protest march in London, women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai is calling on governments of western countries, not to ignore the plight of women in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban has retaken control of the country, the lives of women in Afghanistan have once again become severely restricted, with no access to education, the inability to move about without male escorts, and fear of punishment if they criticise the Taliban.

UK start-up behind algae-based packaging bids for Earthshot glory


London (AFP) – A British start-up founded by two ex-students from France and Spain, crafting biodegradable packaging from marine plants, is aiming to seal royal approval this week when Prince William unveils his latest Earthshot prizes. The five winners will each receive a £1 million ($1.2 million) grant.

Saudi fan confronts Israeli reporter at World Cup in Qatar


Doha (AFP) – A man wearing a Saudi Arabia football shirt confronts an Israeli TV reporter at Education City stadium in Doha, saying “You are not welcome here…There is only Palestine. There is no Israel”. The incident is one of many in which Israeli journalists have been harangued during the World Cup in Qatar.

Firefighters still searching for missing people after Ischia landlside


Casamicciola Terme (Italy) (AFP) – Two days after the deadly landslide on the Italian island of Ischia – where a wave of mud and debris crashed through the small town of Casamicciola Terme – rescue teams are still searching for missing people. According to the Italian agency for fire and rescue service (Vigili del Fuoco), at least eight people have been killed and four others are still missing.
